1980’s

Radiohead, or On A Friday as they were called at the time, played their first ever gig on this day 1986. The venue was the Jericho Tavern in Oxford.

And now for something completely different…Misique des Tsiganes de Roumanie by Taraf de Gaidouks. The troupe of traditional Romanian musicians released this LP in 1991, and play a variety of Eastern European styles. Listen out for the cymbalum. A surprising delight.

I was introduced to the compilation album Coxsone’s Music The First Recordings Of Sir Coxsone The Downbeat 1960-63 by Steve Earle on the Amoeba Records What’s In My Bag? Youtube series. The triple-LP features early Jamaican ska, Rastafari and dancehall, produced by the legendary Clement Dodd. 2 ½ hours of history.

The Gin Blossoms New Miserable Experience is 25 years old today. The album took nearly a year to find success, but did thanks to the single Hey Jealousy.
