The British singer-songwriter Nick Lowe was born (Nicholas Drain Lowe) on this day 1949 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. Lowe is best known for the songs Cruel to Be Kind and I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass, and his debut album Jesus of Cool.

The indie rock band Howling Bells released their debut eponymous album in 2006 to positive reviews. Their dreamy sound is a combination of country, blues, rock and pop, impeccably shaped by Coldplay and Gomez producer Ken Nelson. I hadn’t heard the Howling Bells album since it was released, but quickly remembered many of the tracks, a sign of true quality.

The 2nd LP from the New York hip-hop collective A Tribe Called Quest The Low End Theory, released in 1991, is seen as a hip-hop masterpiece. Low End is darker, harder yet more minimalist than their debut. Includes the singles Check the Rhime, Jazz (We’ve Got) and Scenario.
