On this Day in Music – 1st January

The lead singer of the 1960s psychedelic rock group Country Joe and the Fish, Country Joe McDonald was born on this day 1942.

The country music star Hank Williams died on this day 1953.  On a journey from a restaurant in Bristol, Virginia to the Skyline Drive-In Oak Hill, West Virginia, Williams died in the backseat of a Cadillac.  The car, driven by a college student, was hired to take Williams to his next show at the Palace Theatre in Canton, Ohio.  Although disputed, it is widely believed Williams died of an accidental overdose of painkillers and alcohol.  A few of William’s  most famous songs are Your Cheatin’ Heart, Hey, Good Lookin’ and I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.

The American hip hop recording artist Joseph Saddler, better known by his stage name Grandmaster Flash was born on this day 1958.
