1940’s

The Animals and War vocalist Eric Burdon was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England on this day 1941.  Burdon sang lead vocals on such hits as The House of the Rising Sun,  Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood and We Gotta Get out of This Place.

1980’s

The iconic Jamaican reggae singer Bob Marley died on this day 1981 at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (University of Miami Hospital), at just 36 years of age. Marley had suffered with a malignant melanoma under a toenail, which eventually spread throughout his body. Urban legend suggested his initial injury came from playing football, but this was unlikely. Marley’s music helped reggae music to become globally commercial.
