The 1956 album, Pithecanthropus Erectus, by jazz composer and bassist Charles Mingus was his first where he taught arrangements to his musicians by ear. The LP is seen as hugely influential to the style of free collective improvisation that followed.

The new stunning album by Moses Sumney called græ: Part 1, is as the title suggests the first instalment. Sumney’s incredible falsetto is something to behold. A wonderful electronic soul album. Love the vocals on the track Virile.

The 1959 Miles Davis album Porgy and Bess is 60 years old today! The LP contains arrangements of George Gershwin’s 1935 opera of the same name, in collaboration with Gil Evans. Regard highly among jazz critics, and fans. Includes Cannonball Adderley on alto sax. I adore this album.

The Eric Clapton album Pilgrim is 20 years old today! Clapton’s 13th studio album was the first in 9 years to feature all new material. The LP received mixed reviews, with complaints of over-production and schmaltzy ballads. It’s not his best work, but I actually enjoyed the listen. Your views?
