1983 – The Culture Club single Karma Chameleon began a six-week spell at the top of the UK Single Chart. The song was the band’s biggest hit.
1970’s
1973 – The American folk and rock singer-songwriter Jim Croce died when the plane in which he was travelling crashed into a tree during takeoff from the Natchitoches Regional Airport in Louisiana. Croce was just 30 years old.
1960’s
1966 – Distant Drums by Jim Reeves became the UK Number One Single, where it remained for 5 weeks. The song was the only UK Number One by the American Country singer, albeit two years after Reeves died in a plane crash.
1966 – The lead guitarist of the Boston rock band Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt, was born in Praia da Vitória in the Azores.
