The American singer-songwriter and musician Gregg Allman, known for performing in the Allman Brothers Band, was born at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on this day 1947. Allman wrote several of the band’s best known songs, including Whipping Post, Melissa, and Midnight Rider.
The musician John Lennon, and founder of The Beatles, was murdered by Mark Chapman outside the Dakota Building in New York City on this day 1980. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the nearby Roosevelt Hospital at 11:00 p.m. (EST).
